When the Portuguese destroyed the ancient Viharaya in 1575, all those sculptural work and the paintings of antiquity, perished with it. Hence it is a pity that there is no evidence of any ancient paintings or sculpture, belonging to the Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa period, existing at the temple now. The extant paintings and works of sculpture are all of recent origin. They can be divided into two classes – those of the 18th century and those of the early 20th century.
